Grand Theft Auto VI, one of the most anticipated titles in gaming history, has been officially delayed once again. Rockstar Games announced that the new release date is now set for May 26, 2026. Originally expected to launch in 2025, GTA 6 will arrive nearly 13 years after the release of GTA V. The studio explained that the delay was necessary to maintain the high quality the franchise is known for.
“We’re truly sorry it’s coming later than expected,” Rockstar stated in its announcement. “The excitement and passion for a new Grand Theft Auto game continues to inspire our entire team. We are incredibly grateful for your patience and ongoing support as we finish development.”
As with every major Rockstar title, the goal remains to exceed player expectations. The company emphasized that additional development time is essential to deliver the level of polish and quality fans deserve. They expressed hope that the community would understand the need for this delay.
The only trailer released so far, in December 2023, offered glimpses of the game’s setting and characters. The story unfolds in Vice City, a fictional metropolis inspired by Miami. GTA VI will feature Lucia, the first female protagonist in the series. The plot seems to follow a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style narrative, as Lucia and her partner navigate a crime-filled world while evading law enforcement.
The GTA franchise is Rockstar Games’ crown jewel. According to Radio Times, GTA V alone generated over $8.6 billion in revenue, making it one of the most financially successful video games ever. A delay in GTA VI's release is therefore not only significant for fans but could also impact the company's financial outlook in the short term. Nevertheless, delivering a high-caliber game could pay off in the long run.
Delays like this are common in the video game industry, especially for large-scale productions. Studios like Rockstar often work under intense pressure and tight deadlines. Considering that GTA V sold over 210 million copies, it's clear that expectations for GTA VI are sky-high, and the developers need time to meet them.
