Volkswagen Golf 9: Major Changes Ahead for the Electric Era

One of the most iconic vehicles in automotive history, the Volkswagen Golf, is preparing for a major transformation with its next generation. German automaker Volkswagen is currently developing the ninth generation of the Golf, and the first silhouette of its fully electric version has now surfaced.

The image suggests that the upcoming Golf will feature significant design changes aimed at adapting the model to the electric vehicle era while maintaining the identity that made it one of the brand’s best-selling cars.

First preview shown at Wolfsburg meeting

The first official image of the ninth-generation Golf was shared by the German trade union IG Metall. The image was reportedly shown to Volkswagen employees during a works council meeting at the company’s plant in Wolfsburg.

During the meeting, Volkswagen confirmed that Golf production will continue at the Wolfsburg factory in the future.

Noticeable design changes

Although the silhouette does not reveal full details, several design changes are noticeable compared to the current Volkswagen Golf Mk8.

The new model appears to feature:

  • A more prominent roof spoiler
  • A more upright rear design
  • A more aerodynamic body shape

These design updates are expected to improve efficiency and driving range, which are critical factors for electric vehicles.

Built on the new SSP platform

The electric Golf will be built on Volkswagen’s next-generation architecture called the SSP (Scalable Systems Platform). This platform is being developed in collaboration with the American electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian.

The platform will support an 800-volt electrical architecture, enabling:

  • Faster charging speeds
  • Improved battery performance
  • More efficient energy management

The architecture may also allow a longer wheelbase, providing a more spacious interior for passengers.

Advanced software and OTA updates

Another major innovation will be the vehicle’s software-focused architecture.

The new system developed with Rivian will allow deeper integration between software and hardware. It will also enable over-the-air (OTA) updates, meaning drivers can receive new features, performance improvements, and software enhancements without visiting a service center.

Interior design and cockpit

The interior design is expected to adopt a cockpit layout similar to the upcoming Volkswagen ID Polo.

Expected features include:

  • 10.25-inch digital driver display
  • 13-inch central touchscreen
  • Physical buttons for climate and audio controls

Volkswagen’s head of design Andreas Mindt previously stated that the new Golf will retain elements from earlier generations. In particular, the design philosophy of the Volkswagen Golf Mk7 will serve as an inspiration.

Electric and combustion versions together

The ninth-generation Golf will not be exclusively electric. Expected to debut in 2028, the new model will be offered with both:

  • A fully electric version
  • Internal combustion and hybrid variants

The electric model is likely to be marketed as “ID Golf”, while the combustion model will be a heavily updated evolution of the current Golf. Both versions are expected to share a very similar design language.
