Apple to Reunite with Intel to Produce Entry-Level M-Series Chips Starting in 2027
Apple is preparing to reshape its chip manufacturing roadmap by partnering with Intel once again—five years after the two companies ended their long-running processor relationship. According to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Intel will begin manufacturing Apple’s entry-level M-series chips in mid-2027, marking a significant return for the tech giants.
Under the agreement, Intel will produce Apple’s lowest-tier M-series processors using its cutting-edge 18A process node, with mass production expected to begin in the second or third quarter of 2027. These chips are set to power devices such as the MacBook Air, iPad Air, and base iPad Pro models, with projected annual shipments estimated between 15 and 20 million units.
Unlike their previous arrangement—where Intel designed and supplied x86 processors for Macs—Intel will now operate strictly as a manufacturer, producing ARM-based chips designed entirely by Apple.
The move underscores Apple’s broader strategy to reduce its reliance on TSMC, which currently handles the fabrication of all M-series and A-series chips, including those used in iPhones. TSMC will continue producing Apple’s higher-end Pro, Max, and Ultra variants, but Intel’s involvement offers Apple a crucial second advanced-node supplier to strengthen its supply chain resilience.
Kuo explains that the partnership serves two key objectives:
- Supporting U.S.-based semiconductor manufacturing efforts, and
- Establishing an alternative source for advanced-node production to minimize supply-chain risks.
Apple has already signed an NDA with Intel and received the 18AP PDK 0.9.1GA kit required for early simulation and development. The company awaits Intel’s release of PDK versions 1.0 and 1.1, expected in the first quarter of 2026, before finalizing its production timeline.
This renewed Apple–Intel partnership signals a major shift in the semiconductor landscape, potentially influencing both companies’ strategic trajectories in the years ahead.
