F1 2026 Australian GP Qualifying: Mercedes Locks Front Row with Russell on Pole
Qualifying for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix delivered plenty of drama and surprises. George Russell secured pole position while Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team dominated the session by locking out the front row.
Russell will start the race alongside teammate Kimi Antonelli, while Isack Hadjar of Red Bull Racing qualified in third place.
Q1: Verstappen crash triggers red flag
The first qualifying session began with green flags and Nico Hülkenberg leading the cars onto the circuit.
After the first flying laps, George Russell took the top spot with a time of 1:19.840. Most drivers ran on soft tyres, while Scuderia Ferrari opted for medium compounds.
Drama struck with seven minutes remaining when Max Verstappen crashed into the barriers at Turn 1, causing a red flag.
Once the session resumed, drivers rushed to improve their lap times. Russell finished Q1 fastest with a 1:19.507 lap, followed by Oscar Piastri and Lewis Hamilton.
Eliminated in Q1 were Fernando Alonso, Sergio Perez, Valtteri Bottas, Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz, and Lance Stroll.
Q2: Russell remains fastest
Drivers immediately headed out as Q2 began. Ferrari switched to soft tyres for the session.
Russell once again set the pace with a 1:18.934 lap time. Charles Leclerc secured second place, around four-tenths behind, while Antonelli finished third.
Drivers eliminated in Q2 included Nico Hülkenberg, Alex Albon, and drivers from Haas F1 Team and Alpine F1 Team.
Q3: Mercedes dominates
The final qualifying segment featured another unusual moment when a cooling fan left inside Antonelli’s car flew onto the track as he exited the pit lane. After Lando Norris drove over debris, the session was briefly red-flagged to clear the circuit.
Once the session resumed, Russell delivered a stunning lap of 1:18.518, securing pole position for Mercedes.
Antonelli finished second, just 0.293 seconds behind his teammate, completing a Mercedes front-row lockout. Hadjar qualified third for Red Bull, ahead of Charles Leclerc in fourth.
McLaren drivers filled the fifth and sixth positions, while Lewis Hamilton finished seventh.
With such a strong qualifying performance, Mercedes enters the season opener as the team to beat, and all eyes will now be on whether Russell can convert pole position into victory on race day.
