F1 2026 Australian Grand Prix: Russell Leads Mercedes to a Dominant 1-2 Finish
The 2026 Australian Grand Prix, held at Melbourne’s iconic Albert Park Circuit, delivered an exciting start to the Formula 1 season. George Russell claimed victory after a dramatic race, while his teammate Kimi Antonelli secured second place, giving Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team a strong 1-2 finish. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the podium in third.
Pre-Race Drama
Just thirty minutes before the race, local favorite Oscar Piastri crashed at Turn 4 while heading to his grid position. The incident forced the Australian driver to miss his home Grand Prix entirely.
Meanwhile, Nico Hülkenberg was scheduled to start from the pit lane but ultimately did not take the start.
Intense Battle at the Start
When the five red lights went out, the race officially began. Russell struggled to launch cleanly, allowing Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to surge from fourth on the grid to take the lead.
Lewis Hamilton also made a strong start, moving up to third before the end of the opening lap. Behind them, Isack Hadjar held fourth place while rookie Arvid Lindblad climbed to fifth.
Russell vs. Leclerc
On lap two, Russell managed to pass Leclerc and retake the lead. However, the Ferrari driver fought back and reclaimed first place just one lap later. The duel between the two drivers continued for several laps, with multiple overtaking attempts.
Russell eventually succeeded again on lap eight, briefly taking the lead before Leclerc once more fought back. Their intense battle defined the opening phase of the race.
Safety Cars and Strategic Decisions
Around lap 11, Isack Hadjar retired from the race after smoke appeared from the rear of his Red Bull, triggering a virtual safety car.
During this period, Mercedes opted for a pit stop, while Ferrari chose to keep their drivers on track. This strategy temporarily put Leclerc back in the lead with Hamilton running second.
Meanwhile, Aston Martin F1 Team instructed Fernando Alonso to retire the car due to ongoing technical concerns. Team advisor Adrian Newey had already hinted that the car might not complete the full race distance.
Mid-Race Incidents
On lap 18, Valtteri Bottas stopped on the grass at Turn 11, bringing out another virtual safety car. Ferrari once again stayed on track.
However, Ferrari later chose to pit around lap 20 without a safety car period, a decision that ultimately handed track position back to the Mercedes drivers.
Another short virtual safety car occurred mid-race due to debris on track, later identified as coming from Sergio Perez’s car.
Russell Secures Victory
The remainder of the race ran relatively smoothly. After 58 laps, George Russell crossed the finish line first, claiming victory. Kimi Antonelli followed in second, securing a dominant one-two finish for Mercedes.
Charles Leclerc finished third, while Lewis Hamilton came home in fourth. Lando Norris completed the top five, and reigning champion Max Verstappen finished sixth.
The result signals a strong start for Mercedes and hints at an intense championship battle ahead in the 2026 Formula 1 season.
