An Era Comes to an End: Helmut Marko Retires from Red Bull and F1

One of the most influential and powerful figures in Formula 1, Dr. Helmut Marko, has officially stepped away from Red Bull. The 82-year-old Austrian executive, who had been a central pillar of Red Bull’s Formula 1 project for two decades, announced his decision to retire, marking the end of a remarkable chapter in motorsport history.

In a brief but meaningful official statement, Red Bull GmbH confirmed Marko’s departure. The turning point behind his decision was the dramatic conclusion of the 2025 Formula 1 season, where Max Verstappen narrowly lost the Drivers’ Championship to Lando Norris by just two points. According to Marko, that moment made him realize it was time to close this demanding chapter of his life.

Reflecting on his journey, Marko said:
“I have spent 60 years in motorsport. The 20 years I experienced at Red Bull were an extraordinary adventure filled with success. I had the chance to work with incredible talents and build something truly special.”

He also admitted that missing the championship by such a small margin deeply affected him, reinforcing his belief that it was the right time to step away.

Joining Red Bull in 2005 as motorsport advisor, Marko worked alongside key figures such as Christian Horner, Adrian Newey, and Jonathan Wheatley, becoming one of the foundational pillars of the team. One of his most lasting legacies is the Red Bull Junior Program, which he created and managed. Thanks to this system, 17 young drivers successfully made their way to the Formula 1 grid, making it one of the most respected talent development programs in modern racing.

As the right-hand man of Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz, Marko enjoyed unparalleled trust and authority within the team, shaping its long-term vision and competitive philosophy.

Although he is stepping away, Marko leaves with confidence in the team’s future, stating:
“I truly believe the team will once again fight for both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships next year.”
