Paramount cancels Dexter: Original Sin, shifts focus to Resurrection

Premiering in December, Dexter: Original Sin took viewers back to the early 1990s, exploring the formative years of a young and inexperienced Dexter Morgan. The series received generally positive reviews and strong ratings, which led Paramount to greenlight a second season in April. However, just months later, the studio has reversed its decision.

The turning point came in July with the launch of Dexter: Resurrection, a direct continuation of the original series. The show quickly outperformed expectations, drawing a much larger audience and prompting Paramount to shift its attention entirely to this sequel. As a result, Original Sin has been officially canceled, and its planned second season will not move forward.

Industry insiders note that this decision is tied not only to Resurrection’s success but also to the recent Skydance–Paramount merger. With Skydance now overseeing Paramount’s operations, ongoing projects are being reevaluated, and resources are being funneled into the most commercially viable titles.

While Original Sin explored Dexter’s early life in 1991, Resurrection is set in the present day, continuing Dexter Morgan’s story and establishing itself as the central pillar of the franchise moving forward.
