F1: Red Bull enters new era as Christian Horner departs, Laurent Mekies steps in

The Formula 1 paddock was rocked by seismic news as Red Bull Racing officially parted ways with their long-time team principal Christian Horner, ending a two-decade-long leadership era. Laurent Mekies, who had been heading the Racing Bulls team, has been appointed as his successor with immediate effect.

Horner, who had been at the helm since the team’s inception in 2005, led Red Bull to unprecedented success, including seven drivers’ championships and multiple constructors’ titles. However, a clear decline in performance over the past 18 months pushed the team into uncharted territory. As of mid-2025, Red Bull sits only fourth in the Constructors’ Championship.

McLaren’s resurgence since May 2024 coincided with Red Bull’s competitive slide. The issues extended beyond the track, with the departure of key figures like Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley adding to the turmoil. These changes have also cast doubt over Max Verstappen’s future with the team, despite his contract running through 2028. With exit clauses potentially activated by the end of the month, teams like Mercedes remain on high alert.

Mekies brings leadership experience from Racing Bulls and a deep understanding of Red Bull's system. Alan Permane, previously the team's racing director, will take over as the new principal of Racing Bulls, working alongside CEO Peter Bayer.

In his statement, Mekies said: “It’s been an honor to work with Peter and help build Racing Bulls from the ground up. The team has an extraordinary spirit, and I believe this is just the beginning. Alan is the perfect fit to take over and continue the momentum we’ve built together.”

With Horner’s departure, Red Bull finds itself at a crossroads, ushering in a new chapter filled with uncertainty, but also possibility.
