F1: Russell wins dramatic 2025 Canadian GP: Safety car finish, Norris crashes out

The 2025 Formula 1 season continued its thrilling streak with the Canadian Grand Prix delivering plenty of drama and tension. At Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Mercedes driver George Russell converted his pole position into a well-earned victory. Red Bull's Max Verstappen finished second, while young rookie Kimi Antonelli impressed the paddock by securing his maiden podium in third place.

The race began with Russell defending his lead into Turn 1, as Antonelli jumped to third. Early on, a wheel-to-wheel battle between Franco Colapinto and Alex Albon resulted in Albon running off the track and rejoining safely. Verstappen quickly closed in on Russell but couldn’t find a way past and dropped out of DRS range.

Tire degradation became a common concern across the grid, prompting early pit stops. Verstappen pitted first for hard tires, with Russell responding a lap later. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton struck a groundhog on track, damaging the floor of his car.

The second half of the race saw the field reshuffle with more pit stops and close battles. Antonelli nearly overtook Verstappen after his second stop, but the reigning champion held firm. McLaren’s Piastri and Norris engaged in a fierce fight for fourth, which ended in disaster when Norris touched the rear of Piastri’s car and crashed into the wall.

This incident brought out the safety car with just four laps remaining. The race ended under caution, with Russell claiming the win. A brief controversy followed as Russell accused Verstappen of overtaking under the safety car, while Verstappen blamed Russell’s sudden braking.

Russell stood on the top step of the podium, joined by Verstappen in second and Antonelli in third. Piastri took fourth, followed by both Ferrari drivers in fifth and sixth. Alonso finished seventh, with Hülkenberg, Ocon, and Sainz rounding out the top ten.
