A new era for MotoGP: European Commission approves Liberty Media's acquisition

MotoGP, one of the world’s premier motorcycle racing championships, is on the verge of a major transformation. Liberty Media, already the owner of Formula 1, has received unconditional approval from the European Commission to acquire a majority stake in Dorna Sports, the rights holder of MotoGP. The deal is expected to be finalized by July 3, 2025.

In recent years, MotoGP has seen growing global interest with record-breaking audience numbers and the addition of new racing venues. Liberty Media aims to build on this momentum, with plans to expand MotoGP’s commercial reach and global fan base.

Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports since 1998, will remain in his position alongside the current leadership team. He welcomed the Commission's decision, calling it a milestone that reflects MotoGP’s bright future, and expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Liberty Media.

Derek Chang, President and CEO of Liberty Media, described MotoGP as a top-tier sports asset with passionate fans, thrilling races, and a solid financial foundation. Liberty Media will acquire 84% of Dorna Sports, while the remaining 16% will stay under MotoGP’s current management. This new partnership aims to strengthen existing fan engagement and attract new international audiences.

Following its success in transforming Formula 1, Liberty Media now prepares to apply a similar growth strategy to MotoGP.
