Cadillac’s 2026 F1 debut: Bottas emerges as a strong contender

As the 2026 Formula 1 season approaches, Cadillac, the new American entrant, is preparing to make a bold entrance—and all eyes are on Valtteri Bottas as a frontrunner for the team’s first official seat.

The seasoned Finnish driver, who boasts ten Grand Prix victories, is currently serving as a reserve driver for Mercedes. However, his decision to remain in the F1 ecosystem was clearly part of a calculated move to stay within reach of a future seat. It seems that strategy is now paying off. Reports suggest Cadillac executives will hold serious talks with Bottas during the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

The negotiations will include Dan Towriss, head of TWG Group, which owns Cadillac’s racing efforts and holds stakes in Andretti Global and Wayne Taylor Racing. Towriss is expected to be personally involved in selecting the drivers for Cadillac’s inaugural F1 season.

Sergio Perez was initially rumored to be Cadillac’s top choice. However, momentum now appears to favor Bottas, who has steadily gained traction as the leading candidate. The final decision rests with team principal Graeme Lowdon. If the team aims for a fully experienced duo, both Bottas and Perez could join. But if they prefer to pair a veteran with a younger talent, only one may be selected.

For now, Bottas seems to have the edge. A recent social media post by the Finnish driver added fuel to the fire. Approaching a parked Cadillac SUV, Bottas admired the vehicle and remarked, “What a nice seat.” He then added, “There are two seats—and both look empty.” When someone off-camera suggested he sit in, Bottas replied, “Not yet.” Fans and pundits alike interpreted this as a not-so-subtle hint.

As Cadillac prepares its entry into the F1 grid, Bottas’s blend of experience and strategic patience could make him the perfect candidate to lead this new chapter.
