Chinese Video Platform Bilibili Is Going Global
Chinese video platform Bilibili is accelerating its international expansion, launching a new global app and preparing an English-language version of its website as it seeks to attract viewers and content creators from around the world.
Often described as a Chinese alternative to YouTube, Bilibili is now looking beyond its traditional domestic audience. The company's new strategy focuses not only on attracting international viewers but also on convincing Western creators to publish their content directly on the platform.
Bilibili Begins Its Global Expansion
Bilibili has technically been accessible outside China for some time. However, its latest moves represent a much more deliberate effort to establish itself as a genuinely international video platform.
The company has relaunched its international Android application, with an iOS version reportedly also in development.
One of the most significant changes is the removal of identity-verification requirements.
Previously, users outside China who wanted to register on Bilibili's main Chinese platform were required to provide a passport or another official identification document. That requirement has now been removed from the international service.
The change could significantly reduce one of the barriers preventing new international users from joining the platform.
Chinese and International Content Will Share One Ecosystem
Another major part of Bilibili's international strategy involves changing how content is presented.
The company reportedly plans to combine Chinese and international videos within the same global ecosystem, transforming Bilibili from a predominantly China-focused service into a much broader international video platform.
The company is also reportedly approaching YouTube creators and other established video personalities in an effort to convince them to publish content on Bilibili.
If successful, the strategy could allow Bilibili to build a diverse creator community spanning multiple countries and regions.
Istanbul Is Part of Bilibili's International Strategy
Bilibili's expansion is not limited to the United States and Western Europe.
The company is reportedly hiring employees in Los Angeles, London, Mexico City, São Paulo, Istanbul and Tokyo, highlighting the scale of its international ambitions.
The inclusion of Istanbul is particularly notable, suggesting that Türkiye is also being considered as part of Bilibili's broader global content strategy.
The company is additionally working on an English-language version of its website to make it easier for creators outside China to upload and manage their content.
Removing language and technical barriers could make the platform significantly more attractive to international creators.
Could Bilibili Face the Same Scrutiny as TikTok?
Bilibili's global ambitions also raise an important question: could the company eventually face the same regulatory scrutiny as TikTok?
TikTok has faced years of political and national-security concerns in the United States because of its Chinese ownership and data practices. Those concerns eventually led to intense pressure surrounding the future ownership and operation of its US business.
If Bilibili becomes similarly popular internationally, questions surrounding data storage, user privacy and potential access to user information by China-based entities could become increasingly prominent.
For that reason, Bilibili's international expansion could become not only a commercial challenge but also a regulatory and political one.
Another Challenge for YouTube
If Bilibili succeeds in attracting established creators, it could add even more pressure to YouTube, which remains the dominant global video platform.
However, competition in the creator economy is becoming increasingly intense. Netflix has been expanding into video podcasts and creator-focused programming, while other platforms are also fighting to secure exclusive or early access to popular creators.
The competition has become so fierce that YouTube itself is reportedly considering deals that would encourage major channels to publish content on YouTube before distributing it across multiple platforms.
Bilibili's arrival on the global stage could therefore intensify the battle for creators even further.
A New Global Video Competitor?
Bilibili's biggest advantage is the enormous audience and content ecosystem it has built in China. The challenge will be translating that success into international markets.
Localization, creator incentives, language support, user trust and regulatory compliance will all play a major role in determining whether the company's global strategy succeeds.
If Bilibili manages to attract a significant number of creators outside China, it could emerge as a serious new competitor in the global video market—and make the battle between YouTube, Netflix, TikTok and other platforms even more competitive.
