Have Hydration Breaks Led to More Goals at the 2026 World Cup?

One of the most debated innovations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been the introduction of mandatory hydration breaks. Initially designed to help players cope with extreme heat and humidity across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the measure is now attracting attention for another reason: it may be contributing to an increase in goals.


A statistical analysis reviewed by the BBC World Service examined data from the first 100 matches of the tournament, covering the group stage through the quarter-finals. The findings suggest that the five minutes immediately following hydration breaks have produced significantly more goals than expected.

Goal-scoring spikes after the breaks

The study was conducted by Professor Brennan Klein and his research team at Northeastern University in Boston. By analyzing shooting patterns, defensive actions, and scoring data, they identified what they describe as a short-term offensive surge following each hydration break.

Traditionally, the periods between the 25th and 30th minutes and the 70th and 75th minutes are not among the most productive goal-scoring phases of a match. However, during this World Cup, those same windows have become noticeably more dangerous.

Based on historical trends, researchers expected around 27 goals to be scored during those periods across 100 matches. Instead, the actual figure reached 38 goals.

Out of the tournament's 48 participating teams, 27 scored at least one goal within five minutes of a hydration break.

Argentina benefited the most

According to the data, Argentina has gained the greatest advantage from these interruptions. The South American side scored three goals during the post-break periods while conceding none.

England, meanwhile, benefited the least, scoring only one goal during the same windows.

As the two nations prepare to meet in the semi-finals, the impact of hydration breaks has become an intriguing subplot for fans and analysts alike.

Better chances, not more shots

One of the study's most surprising conclusions is that the increase in goals is not linked to an increase in shooting volume.

Instead, players appear to create and convert higher-quality chances after the breaks. Shots taken during these periods are generally closer to goal and come from more dangerous positions, increasing their likelihood of finding the net.

According to Professor Brennan Klein, the quality of opportunities improves significantly even though the overall number of attempts remains relatively unchanged.

A controversial tournament feature

Hydration breaks have not been universally welcomed. Many supporters have criticized the interruptions for disrupting the flow of matches, while others argue that they effectively create additional advertising opportunities for broadcasters.

Reports suggest that American television networks could generate hundreds of millions of dollars in extra advertising revenue during these scheduled pauses.

Despite the criticism, the research found little evidence that the breaks negatively affect the overall pace of play. Defensive mistakes do not appear to increase, nor do players seem less focused after returning to the field.

Instead, the data suggests that attacking players simply become sharper and more effective following a brief period of recovery.

Whether viewed as a player welfare measure or a tactical factor, hydration breaks have emerged as one of the most influential and unexpected talking points of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
