Volkswagen ID.3 Neo Arrives: More Range, Real Buttons and a Return to “True VW” Values
Volkswagen is giving its first fully electric hatchback a major overhaul. Rebranded as the ID.3 Neo, the updated model represents far more than a typical facelift—it signals a strategic shift toward user-focused design and a return to the brand’s core identity.
Originally launched in 2020, the ID.3 marked Volkswagen’s first purpose-built EV. However, early criticisms around software and usability held it back. With the Neo update, Volkswagen aims to correct those shortcomings and rebuild customer trust.
Interior overhaul: Physical controls are back
The most significant transformation lies inside the cabin. Responding directly to customer feedback, Volkswagen has replaced the controversial touch-sensitive sliders with proper physical buttons. A traditional volume knob, dedicated climate controls, and tactile steering wheel buttons significantly improve usability and safety.
Material quality has also been enhanced, with softer surfaces and a more refined finish. Practical improvements—such as separate window controls for each door—further enhance everyday convenience.
The new 13-inch infotainment display and 10.25-inch digital driver display bring a modern tech experience, while offering retro-inspired customization reminiscent of classic 1980s Golf dashboards.
Improved range and performance
The ID.3 Neo comes with three battery and motor configurations:
- 50kWh battery with 168bhp
- 58kWh battery with 188bhp
- 79kWh battery with 228bhp
The most efficient version delivers up to 391 miles (around 630 km) of range—an increase over its predecessor. Fast charging capability has also improved, reaching up to 183kW.
Subtle but meaningful design updates
While exterior changes are more restrained, they refine the car’s overall presence. A redesigned front end aligns the ID.3 Neo with future Volkswagen EVs, while features like a painted roof and tailgate enhance its proportions, giving it a wider and lower stance.
A return to “true Volkswagen”
CEO Thomas Schäfer describes the ID.3 Neo as the first model of a new era for the brand—one that prioritizes real user needs over excessive feature lists. The updated software platform introduces features like Travel Assist (semi-autonomous driving), one-pedal driving, and vehicle-to-load functionality.
Ultimately, the ID.3 Neo represents a reset for Volkswagen—blending modern EV technology with the simplicity and reliability that defined the brand for decades.
