Stellantis and Leapmotor Deepen Partnership: A New Electric Opel SUV on the Horizon
As competition intensifies in the global electric vehicle market, Stellantis and Leapmotor are expanding their collaboration with a new project focused on Opel. The partnership is set to deliver a new electric SUV, which will be produced at Stellantis’ Zaragoza plant in Spain.
According to industry reports, the upcoming model will leverage Leapmotor’s technological platform while being manufactured in Europe. This approach aims to significantly reduce production costs while strengthening competitiveness against rapidly growing Chinese automakers.
Cost Efficiency and Competitive Positioning
At the core of this partnership lies a clear objective: accelerating EV development while lowering associated costs. Stellantis has recently adjusted its electrification strategy, partly due to increasing demand for hybrid vehicles, prompting a more flexible and cost-conscious approach.
With companies like BYD aggressively expanding their global footprint, European automakers are under pressure to innovate faster and operate more efficiently. Stellantis is therefore focusing on optimizing factory utilization in Europe while shortening time-to-market for new models.
CEO Antonio Filosa is expected to unveil a broader long-term strategy that could further reinforce such collaborations.
Joint Venture and Shared Technology
Stellantis laid the financial groundwork for this partnership in 2023 by acquiring approximately a 20% stake in Leapmotor. Since then, the collaboration has evolved into a broader operational alliance.
The two companies established “Leapmotor International,” a joint venture responsible for managing production and sales outside China. The upcoming Opel SUV is expected to be developed and distributed under this framework.
What to Expect from the New SUV
The new model is rumored to be built on Leapmotor’s B10 compact SUV platform, enabling faster development cycles and cost efficiencies through shared architecture.
Production is scheduled to begin in 2028, with an annual output target of around 50,000 units. This model is expected to play a key role in expanding Opel’s electric lineup and reinforcing its presence in the European EV market.
