Volkswagen Refreshes the ID.3: The Electric Hatchback Returns as 'ID.3 Neo'
German automaker Volkswagen is preparing a major update for one of the key models in its electric lineup, the Volkswagen ID.3. According to the company, the refreshed version of the vehicle will be unveiled in mid-April and will be renamed Volkswagen ID.3 Neo. The updated model will feature several improvements in both hardware and software, with the goal of keeping the car competitive in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
Ahead of the official debut, Volkswagen released design sketches of the vehicle. While the images show that the overall shape of the car will remain largely the same, the styling has been refined to align with the brand’s latest generation of electric vehicles. The design approach appears to be consistent with upcoming models such as the Volkswagen ID. Polo and the Volkswagen ID. Cross.
Most of the visual changes are concentrated at the front of the vehicle. The new design connects the headlights with a slim grille strip, creating a more unified and modern front fascia. The air intakes on the front bumper have also been simplified to achieve a cleaner look, while the side profile largely preserves the original proportions of the model.
At the rear, the graphics of the LED taillights have been updated. In addition, the lower section of the tailgate is now painted in body color rather than a contrasting shade. Volkswagen is also expected to introduce new exterior colors and wheel designs.
The Volkswagen ID.3 originally launched in 2019 as the brand’s first fully electric production vehicle and received a facelift in 2023. The upcoming Volkswagen ID.3 Neo will represent the second major update since the model’s debut. In the long term, the vehicle is expected to be replaced by the upcoming Volkswagen ID. Golf.
One of the most significant upgrades in the new version will be the Innovision infotainment system. This system will include an integrated app store that provides access to music and video platforms, games, charging services, and parking applications, creating a more comprehensive in-car digital ecosystem.
Another important change inside the cabin concerns the steering wheel controls. In response to user feedback, Volkswagen plans to remove the controversial touch-sensitive controls and replace them with physical buttons, improving usability and driver ergonomics.
The vehicle will also feature a new digital key system that allows users to unlock and start the car using their smartphone or smartwatch. This eliminates the need to carry a traditional physical key.
Volkswagen is also introducing Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology to its ID lineup. This feature allows users to draw up to 3.6 kW of power from the car’s battery through a 230-volt outlet or adapter. As a result, the vehicle can serve as a portable power source for devices such as electric bikes, camping equipment, and other electronic devices.
On the software side, the vehicle will also receive additional driving assistance features including Travel Assist with traffic light detection and support for one-pedal driving.
In addition to the ID.3 update, Volkswagen also announced improvements for its electric SUVs, the Volkswagen ID.4 and Volkswagen ID.5. Entry-level Pure versions of these vehicles will receive the new APP 350 electric motor producing 187 horsepower, offering higher torque and improved efficiency. The vehicles will also feature a new 58 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. According to Volkswagen, these upgrades will increase the WLTP driving range of the Volkswagen ID.4 by approximately 40 kilometers.
