Google Unveils Pixel 10a: A Sustainability-Focused Upgrade with Familiar Performance
Tech giant Google has officially introduced its new budget-friendly smartphone, the Pixel 10a.
While the device maintains much of the same hardware as its predecessor, it stands out with significant advancements in sustainability and long-term software support.
Strong Push Toward Sustainability
One of the most notable aspects of the Pixel 10a is its emphasis on environmentally friendly production. Google states that the device contains the highest proportion of recycled materials ever used in its “a” series smartphones. At least 36 percent of the phone’s weight comes from recycled cobalt, copper, gold, and tungsten.
The aluminum frame is made entirely from recycled material, and 81 percent of the plastic used in the back cover is recycled. Even the packaging is completely plastic-free, reinforcing the company’s commitment to reducing environmental impact.
Familiar Hardware, Reliable Performance
In terms of performance, the Pixel 10a closely mirrors its predecessor. It is powered by the Tensor G4 processor, the same chipset featured in last year’s model. Built using a 4nm process by Samsung, the processor is paired with 8 GB of RAM and comes with storage options of 128 GB or 256 GB.
The device ships with Android 16 and is set to receive seven years of software and security updates, including regular Pixel Drop feature updates. Google is also focusing heavily on AI-powered tools such as the Gemini assistant and Gemini Live to enhance the user experience in the mid-range segment.
Display and Durability Improvements
The Pixel 10a retains its 6.3-inch Actua display but boosts peak brightness from 2,700 nits to 3,000 nits. It also replaces Gorilla Glass 3 with the more durable Gorilla Glass 7i, which offers improved scratch resistance and can withstand drops of up to one meter.
With IP68 certification, the device continues to offer water and dust resistance. Internal design changes have also been made to make the phone easier to repair, aligning with sustainability goals.
Camera Enhancements Through Software
The rear camera setup includes a 48 MP main sensor and a 13 MP ultra-wide lens. While the hardware remains largely unchanged, Google is enhancing the camera experience through AI-powered software features.
Tools such as Camera Coach, Auto Best Take, and Add Me enable users to improve group photos, select the best expressions, and even add themselves into images after the shot has been taken.
Battery, Charging, and Pricing
The Pixel 10a features a 5,100 mAh battery, offering up to 30 hours of usage on a single charge according to Google. Charging speeds have been improved, with wired fast charging increased to 30W and wireless charging upgraded to 10W.
Available in Fog, Obsidian, Berry, and Lavender color options, the Pixel 10a launches in the United States with a starting price of $499. Pre-orders are now open, and deliveries are scheduled to begin on March 5.
