Volkswagen Changes Course: ID.4 to Be Renamed ID.Tiguan
Volkswagen is taking a significant strategic step in its electric vehicle lineup by moving away from numerical model names and returning to more familiar and iconic badges. As part of this transition, the current ID.4 is expected to be rebranded as ID.Tiguan, aligning the electric SUV more closely with one of the brand’s most recognizable nameplates.
According to Automotive News, the information was shared during a press conference in Emden, Germany, with confirmation coming from representatives of IG Metall, the powerful German metalworkers’ union. Following the introduction of the ID.Polo name, Volkswagen is clearly signaling a broader shift toward unifying its electric and combustion-engine model identities.
More Than a Facelift
The transformation from ID.4 to ID.Tiguan will go far beyond a simple facelift. The upcoming update is expected to bring substantial changes to both the exterior and interior design. A redesigned front end featuring an illuminated Volkswagen logo, new bumpers, and a more refined overall appearance are anticipated. Inside the cabin, a cleaner layout and improved usability—similar to what was introduced with ID.Polo—are likely to define the new design language.
While the vehicle will continue to be based on the MEB platform, notable upgrades are planned. These include enhanced battery technology, more powerful electric motors, and advanced driver assistance systems. Rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants are expected to remain part of the lineup.
A Broader Electric Vision
Volkswagen’s renewed electric strategy does not end with ID.Tiguan. The brand’s future roadmap includes additional models such as ID.Cross, while longer-term plans point toward the arrival of ID.Golf and ID.Roc, expected around 2029 or 2030. These models will be built on the group’s next-generation SSP electric platform.
By embracing well-known model names, Volkswagen aims to strengthen emotional ties with consumers and make the transition to electric mobility feel more familiar and accessible.
