George Clooney Becomes a French Citizen, Sparking a Clash With Trump

Renowned Hollywood actor George Clooney has found himself at the center of a political storm after obtaining French citizenship, triggering sharp criticism from former U.S. President Donald Trump. Clooney, however, did not remain silent and responded with pointed remarks of his own.

The 64-year-old Oscar-winning actor, along with his wife Amal Clooney and their two children, officially became French citizens this month. Clooney explained that the family has been living in France for quite some time and that the decision was primarily motivated by a desire to protect their privacy and family life.

Donald Trump reacted strongly on his social media platform, Truth Social, mocking the French government’s decision and directly targeting Clooney. Known for his support of anti-immigration movements across Europe, Trump criticized both Clooney’s political views and his acting career. He sarcastically described the citizenship move as “good news,” referencing Clooney’s long-standing criticism of him and his alignment with the Democratic Party.

In his post, Trump stated that “George and Amal Clooney have become citizens of France, a country facing major crime problems due to disastrous immigration policies,” aiming criticism at both France and the Clooney family.

Clooney responded by referencing the upcoming U.S. elections and cleverly reworking Trump’s famous slogan, saying, “We’re going to make America great again—starting in November.” His reply underscored the political nature of the dispute.

French authorities, meanwhile, defended the decision, emphasizing that the citizenship was granted in full compliance with the law. French legislation allows for exceptional naturalization of individuals who are deemed to have made outstanding contributions to the country’s international influence, culture, or economic well-being.

The controversy has been further fueled by new citizenship regulations set to take effect on January 1, 2026, which introduce stricter requirements. Applicants will be required to demonstrate a high level of French language proficiency and pass a civic knowledge exam. Clooney’s earlier admission that his French remains “weak” despite extensive lessons has intensified debates over fairness and double standards.

Deputy Interior Minister Marie-Pierre Vedrenne acknowledged public concerns in an interview with France Info radio, stating that the message conveyed to citizens must be handled carefully. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that the Clooney family’s citizenship was granted under a special provision in the Civil Code designed for individuals who significantly enhance France’s global standing.

As France continues to debate immigration and citizenship policies, the Clooney family’s decision has become a symbolic and highly visible case, resonating far beyond celebrity news.
