Jolla Is Back: Returning to the Smartphone Market with Sailfish OS
Jolla, a company that made a bold move during the years when Nokia dominated the mobile phone market, is preparing for a strong comeback. After inheriting the legacy of the discontinued MeeGo operating system and developing the Linux-based Sailfish OS platform, the company has ended its long silence with the announcement of a brand-new smartphone: Jolla Phone.
From Years of Silence to a Bold Return
Until 2016, Jolla released a limited number of smartphones and tablets, gaining attention for its unique vision. Afterward, the company went quiet for several years. Now, it is returning with a renewed focus on digital privacy and user independence.
The new device runs on Sailfish OS 5, an operating system that completely disables background data collection, user tracking, and controversial background services such as Google Play. Despite this, users can still install Android apps thanks to a built-in compatibility layer.
Privacy-First Hardware Design
Jolla Phone stands out not only in software but also with hardware-level privacy features. A physical side switch allows users to instantly disable the microphone, speakers, camera, and Bluetooth sensors. This feature is especially appealing to privacy-conscious and security-focused users.
Technical Specifications and Pre-Order Details
The smartphone offers modern hardware aimed at mid-to-high-end users:
- 6.36-inch Full HD AMOLED display
- 12 GB RAM
- 256 GB internal storage
- 50 MP main rear camera
The device is now available for pre-order at 499 Euros. According to the company, if 2,000 pre-orders are reached, mass production will officially begin in January.
Jolla’s Second Chance in a Crowded Market
At a time when the smartphone industry is dominated by Apple and Android ecosystems, Jolla’s comeback is being closely watched. With its strong focus on privacy and its unique operating system, the company aims to carve out a dedicated niche audience.
