Dwayne Johnson’s 'The Smashing Machine': A life-changing role that fell short at the box office
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has faced a rare setback with his latest drama The Smashing Machine, which marks one of the most personal and emotional performances of his career. Despite critical acclaim, the A24 production opened in the U.S. with only 5.9 million dollars in its first weekend, falling well below expectations and recording the lowest opening of Johnson’s career.
Responding with humility, Johnson wrote on Instagram, “You can’t control the box office, but you can control your performance and dedication.” He thanked director Benny Safdie and said, “This film changed my life.”
The film tells the true story of Mark Kerr, a two-time UFC heavyweight champion who struggled with addiction and emotional turmoil behind his professional success. Johnson portrays Kerr with vulnerability and depth, while Emily Blunt plays his wife, Dawn Staples. The 50-million-dollar production premiered at the Venice Film Festival, earning standing ovations and winning Safdie the Best Director Award.
Although the film underperformed financially, critics praised Johnson’s work as one of his finest performances. The Hollywood Reporter’s Jordan Mintzer noted that Johnson “goes deep without overplaying, portraying a gentle warrior torn between triumph and self-destruction.” Mark Kerr himself expressed admiration, saying, “When you talk to him, he gives you his full attention. It’s remarkable.”
While it didn’t meet box office expectations, The Smashing Machine may represent a turning point in Johnson’s acting career. The film will premiere in Turkey on October 17.
