Denzel Washington: I don’t watch movies anymore

Legendary Hollywood actor Denzel Washington has revealed that he no longer enjoys watching movies. In a candid conversation with director Spike Lee and rapper A$AP Rocky for GQ, Washington admitted that after decades in the industry, he has distanced himself from cinema as a viewer.

“I don’t watch movies, man. I really don’t. I don’t go to the theater, I don’t sit at home watching films. I’m just tired of them,” Washington confessed.

When Spike Lee asked how many films he had acted in, Washington replied with a laugh: “Too many… I think around 50!”

Since his debut in the 1981 film Carbon Copy, Washington has appeared in over 50 films. He won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Glory (1989) and later earned the Best Actor Oscar for Training Day (2001).

His upcoming project, Highest 2 Lowest, will premiere on Apple TV+ on September 5. The thriller, inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic High and Low, follows a music mogul entangled in a kidnapping and ransom conspiracy.

Despite his numerous accolades, Washington has previously emphasized that awards have never been his motivation:

“I don’t do this for the Oscars. Sometimes I won when I didn’t deserve it, and sometimes I lost when I should have won. At the end of the day, these trophies won’t mean anything when my time comes.”
