F1: Verstappen nearing Mercedes deal

According to Sky Sports F1 Italy, Max Verstappen is in advanced talks with Mercedes, signaling what could be one of the most dramatic driver moves in recent Formula 1 history. The report claims the Dutch champion is prepared to terminate his Red Bull contract, despite it currently running through 2028.

Though no official agreement has been signed yet, insiders suggest that negotiations are progressing steadily. Verstappen's contract reportedly includes performance clauses that might allow an early exit, especially if internal dynamics at Red Bull continue to shift.

If the transfer materializes, Mercedes will be forced to make a key lineup decision. George Russell and rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli both have contracts expiring at the end of the 2025 season. Sky suggests Russell is the more likely driver to step aside if Verstappen joins, despite his recent strong performances, including a win at the Canadian Grand Prix and a fourth-place standing in the drivers’ championship.

Russell, however, may not be short of suitors. Aston Martin and the upcoming Cadillac F1 team have both been linked to the British driver. While Aston Martin holds contracts with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll for 2026, certain exit clauses could offer flexibility. Russell’s move to Red Bull as Verstappen’s replacement is also a possible twist.

If Verstappen joins Mercedes, it would not only reshape two top teams but also trigger a domino effect throughout the F1 grid. For now, no official comments have been made by either party—but the rumors suggest that seismic changes could be on the horizon.
