James Cameron announces his next project: A bold dive into fantasy with “The Devils”

Acclaimed filmmaker James Cameron has officially announced his next cinematic venture — an adaptation of Joe Abercrombie’s newly released dark fantasy novel, “The Devils.” Through his production company Lightstorm Entertainment, Cameron has acquired the film rights to the novel and will co-write the screenplay with Abercrombie himself.

Best known for fantasy hits like The Blade Itself and Half a King, Abercrombie introduces a unique universe in The Devils, where a group of monsters — including a knight, a vampire, a werewolf, and a librarian — must unite to fend off a horrifying invasion of flesh-eating elves threatening to overrun Europe.

Cameron, currently finishing work on Avatar: Fire and Ash, expressed his excitement for the project, calling it both “a thrilling pleasure” and “a brand-new creative challenge.” He also shared his long-standing admiration for Abercrombie’s works, saying, “The freshness of the world and its characters in The Devils finally pushed me to act and acquire the rights.”

Author Joe Abercrombie returned the praise, stating, “I can’t think of anyone better than James Cameron to adapt this weird and wonderful book to the big screen.”

Meanwhile, Cameron remains deeply involved in the Avatar franchise, with Fire and Ash set to hit theaters on December 19, followed by a fourth installment slated for December 21, 2029. He also holds the rights to Ghosts of Hiroshima, a story centered on the aftermath of the atomic bomb.

Abercrombie, on the other hand, recently contributed to the new season of Netflix’s animated anthology series Love, Death & Robots as a writer.
