Apple is reportedly preparing to equip the upcoming iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air models with 120 Hz displays, marking a long-awaited upgrade for the non-Pro iPhone lineup. However, a new report from China suggests that these screens may lack adaptive refresh rate support, a key feature of Apple’s ProMotion technology.
Until now, ProMotion displays — powered by LTPO panel technology — have been exclusive to iPhone Pro models. These screens can dynamically adjust the refresh rate down to 1 Hz, helping conserve battery power during low-motion content like reading or viewing static images. Without this, the iPhone 17 and 17 Air might suffer from reduced battery life, as the 120 Hz refresh rate will remain constant.
Last September, display analyst Ross Young claimed that the entire iPhone 17 lineup would include ProMotion screens, and his prediction was backed by multiple sources. However, this new report indicates that Apple may instead opt for LTPS panels, which support fixed 120 Hz refresh rates but lack the power-saving capabilities of LTPO.
While Apple hasn’t confirmed these rumors, it’s possible that the decision is driven by cost considerations or the intent to maintain a clear distinction between Pro and standard models. As of now, this remains speculation — but more concrete information is expected with Apple’s official iPhone 17 launch in September 2025.
