Apple skips iOS 19 and launches iOS 26: Here’s what’s new

In an unexpected move, Apple has unveiled iOS 26 instead of the anticipated iOS 19, signaling a bold leap in software evolution for iPhone users. But this isn’t just a rebranding—iOS 26 introduces an entirely reimagined experience powered by a futuristic design and advanced AI integration.

A Fresh Look: The “Liquid Glass” Design
The most striking feature of iOS 26 is its visually immersive “Liquid Glass” interface. This semi-transparent design refracts light and transforms the user experience, breathing new life into icons, widgets, and the Home and Lock Screens. The new system introduces dynamic 3D wallpapers that respond to device motion, making the interface feel alive.

Apple Intelligence: Smarter, More Personal
At the core of iOS 26 is Apple Intelligence—a privacy-first AI system embedded across the OS. It offers intelligent recommendations, visual recognition, and contextual assistance. For example, it can scan a poster and suggest calendar entries, extract tracking details from emails, and streamline everyday tasks—all on-device.

Revamped Apps and Seamless Features
The Phone and Messages apps are now smarter than ever with spam call filtering, live voicemail, and better message categorization. Integrated Live Translation enables seamless cross-language communication in real-time via Messages, Phone, and FaceTime. A new Apple Games app offers a central hub for all gaming needs.

Enhanced CarPlay and App Experiences
CarPlay benefits from a compact UI for calls and improved access to navigation without distractions. Meanwhile, Safari, Apple Music, and Podcasts offer a more fluid tab interface that adapts to user behavior.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s SVP of Software Engineering, calls iOS 26 “a meaningful step in making the iPhone more personal and powerful.” Clearly, this is more than a version update—Apple is redefining what an iPhone can be.
