Nintendo aims high with Switch 2: 15 million units targeted by March 2026

Nintendo is setting ambitious goals with its next-generation console, the Switch 2. The company plans to sell 15 million units globally by the end of March 2026. Despite a higher price point compared to its predecessor, this figure is remarkably close to the first-year sales of the original Switch.

According to Nintendo’s latest financial report, both hardware and software sales have declined in the current fiscal year. However, the company anticipates a strong rebound with the launch of the Switch 2, scheduled for June 5. Nintendo expects to reach the sales target within a 10-month period and aims to sell 45 million games for the new console during the same timeframe.

Interestingly, the company is not completely phasing out the original Switch. Nintendo projects to sell an additional 4.5 million units of the older model and over 100 million games by March 2026. While these numbers represent a decline compared to last year’s 10.8 million consoles and 155 million games sold, they still reflect significant ongoing demand.

Launched in March 2017, the original Switch sold an impressive 17.8 million units in its first 13 months and has surpassed 150 million units worldwide to date—putting it close to overtaking the DS as Nintendo’s best-selling console ever.

Despite a relatively high launch price of $450 in the US and €470 in Europe, the Switch 2 is attracting strong consumer interest. It has already garnered 2.2 million pre-orders in Japan and sold out quickly when pre-orders opened in the US, indicating strong early demand and promising signs for Nintendo’s future performance.
