Nio Onvo L60: A Strong Competitor to Tesla Model Y

Nio’s sub-brand Onvo has officially launched its first model, the L60, positioning itself as a strong competitor to the Tesla Model Y in the mid-size SUV market. With an attractive price, the L60 aims to disrupt the segment. Nio CEO William Li sees Onvo as a game-changer in the mass market. The L60’s starting price of RMB 206,900 (€26,370) significantly undercuts Tesla Model Y’s current starting price of RMB 249,900 (€31,860) in China.

Affordable Pricing with BaaS Model

Onvo incorporates Nio’s signature battery swap technology and a battery-as-a-service (BaaS) model, allowing customers to buy the car without the battery, bringing the price down to RMB 149,900 (€19,100). In this case, the smallest 60 kWh battery can be rented for RMB 599 per month (€77).

Design and Performance

The L60 stands at an impressive 4,828 mm in length, 1,930 mm in width, and 1,616 mm in height, making it larger than the Tesla Model Y. It is also the first model under the Nio umbrella to use the NT 3.0 platform, which incorporates a 900V high-voltage architecture for enhanced energy efficiency. While it doesn’t feature LiDAR, it comes equipped with a 4D imaging mmWave radar and an Nvidia Orin X chip for advanced assisted driving capabilities.

With a sleek, aerodynamic design, the L60 achieves a drag coefficient of Cd 0.229, which contributes to its impressive energy consumption of just 12.1 kWh per 100 km. It is available with two battery options: a standard-range 60 kWh pack with a CLTC range of 555 km and a long-range 85 kWh pack offering a CLTC range of 730 km. Additionally, an ultra-long-range battery with a potential range of 1,000 km is in development.

Motor Configurations and Performance

The L60 offers both single and dual-motor configurations. The single-motor rear-wheel-drive variant delivers 240 kW of power and 305 Nm of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. For those seeking higher performance, the dual-motor all-wheel-drive version boasts a combined 340 kW of power and 440 Nm of torque, propelling the L60 from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds.

Special Perks and Delivery

Customers who place a deposit before October 8 will enjoy exclusive benefits, including five years of free access to the NOA full-scenario pilot assist driving feature, battery rental fee waivers for those opting for the BaaS model, complimentary battery swap services, and limited-time discounts on premium paint colors and 20-inch wheels.

With deliveries set to begin on September 28, the Onvo L60 represents a major step forward for Nio as it expands its market reach and continues to offer competitive electric vehicles. The brand’s ambitious sales goals and rapidly growing retail network signal strong confidence in the L60’s potential.
