F1: How Kimi Antonelli Can Win the 2026 F1 World Championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli moved another step closer to the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship with a commanding victory at the United States Grand Prix. Starting from pole position in Austin, the 20-year-old Italian secured his ninth win of the season and strengthened his position at the top of the drivers’ standings.
Antonelli now has a major opportunity to make history at the upcoming Mexico City Grand Prix. If he finishes in the top nine, he will mathematically secure the world championship regardless of where his rivals finish. Such a result would put him on course to become the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history.
Why Didn’t Antonelli Clinch the Title in Austin?
Before the United States Grand Prix, six drivers were still mathematically in contention for the championship: Kimi Antonelli, George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris.
The race in Austin dramatically narrowed the field. Leclerc finished second, Verstappen took third and Norris crossed the line in fifth. Despite their strong results, all three were eliminated from championship contention.
That leaves Antonelli, his Mercedes teammate George Russell and Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton as the only drivers who can still mathematically challenge for the title.
Antonelli did his part by winning the race. However, to secure the championship in Austin, he also needed Russell to finish ninth or lower and Hamilton to finish fifth or lower.
Russell finished eighth, while Hamilton claimed fourth place. Those results delayed Antonelli’s title celebrations, although his substantial points advantage means he is now in an exceptionally strong position with five races remaining.
How Big Is Antonelli’s Championship Lead?
Following the United States Grand Prix, Antonelli leads the drivers’ championship with 365 points. Russell is second on 242 points, while Hamilton sits third with 241.
Antonelli therefore holds a 123-point advantage over his closest challenger, Russell, and a 124-point lead over Hamilton.
Five Grands Prix remain on the 2026 calendar: Mexico City, São Paulo, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. If the schedule remains unchanged, a maximum of 125 points is still available across those events. After the Mexico City race, that figure will fall to 100 points, with four rounds left to run.
This is why Antonelli is so close to securing the title. His current advantage is large enough that a strong result in Mexico could mathematically end the championship battle before the final four races.
What Does Antonelli Need to Do in Mexico?
The most straightforward route to the championship is to finish in the top nine at the Mexico City Grand Prix. If Antonelli finishes ninth or higher, he will be crowned the 2026 Formula 1 World Champion, regardless of Russell’s or Hamilton’s results.
A ninth-place finish would earn Antonelli two points. Given his current lead and the maximum points still available after Mexico, that would be enough to secure the title.
However, finishing outside the top nine would not automatically rule out a championship celebration in Mexico. In that situation, the results of Russell and Hamilton would become crucial.
If Antonelli finishes in the top nine: He will clinch the championship regardless of his rivals’ results.
If Antonelli finishes 10th: The title could still be decided in Mexico, but Russell and Hamilton would need to finish in positions that prevent them from keeping the championship fight alive. A Russell victory could delay the decision.
If Antonelli scores no points: The title battle could continue beyond Mexico if Russell or Hamilton wins and reduces the points gap sufficiently.
For Antonelli, the clearest objective is therefore to deliver a clean race and finish inside the points-paying top nine.
What Do Russell and Hamilton Need to Stay in the Title Fight?
With Antonelli holding such a substantial advantage, both Russell and Hamilton face an uphill battle. They need strong results in Mexico while also relying on the championship leader to lose valuable points.
For George Russell to remain in contention, he needs to win the Mexico City Grand Prix while Antonelli finishes 10th or lower. If Antonelli finishes in the top nine, Russell will be unable to prevent him from clinching the title at that race.
For Lewis Hamilton to keep his championship hopes alive, he must win the race and Antonelli must fail to score any points. If the Italian adds even a single point to his tally, Hamilton’s task becomes considerably more difficult.
Both scenarios depend on Antonelli having a difficult weekend. If the Mercedes driver maintains the consistency he has shown throughout the season, his rivals may have little opportunity to postpone his title triumph.
Could Antonelli Make Formula 1 History?
If Antonelli wins the championship in Mexico City, he will become the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history. At just 20 years old, the Mercedes driver has put himself within reach of a landmark achievement through a season marked by speed, consistency and nine Grand Prix victories.
After his latest win in Austin, his main task is to maintain that form and secure the remaining points needed to settle the championship mathematically. Finishing in the top nine in Mexico would be enough.
Attention now turns to the Mexico City Grand Prix, where Antonelli could complete his title-winning campaign and write a new chapter in Formula 1 history.
