Tesla Begins Countdown for Steering-Wheel-Free Cybercab as Robotaxi Launch Nears
Tesla is approaching a major milestone in its autonomous driving ambitions. The company is preparing to bring its Cybercab, a purpose-built vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals, onto public roads with passengers for the first time.
According to information reported by The Information, Tesla is planning to launch the Cybercab's first public operation in Austin, Texas, sometime in August. The company has not yet announced an exact launch date, but preparations are reportedly moving toward the final stage.
Tesla employees are expected to be the first passengers
The initial passenger rides are expected to involve Tesla employees. Following these early journeys, the company reportedly aims to add the vehicles to its Austin robotaxi service within a matter of days.
The move would represent much more than the introduction of a new Tesla vehicle. It would also mark a significant real-world test for the company's long-standing ambition to create a fully autonomous transportation network.
Tesla has repeatedly highlighted robotaxis as an important part of its future strategy, with Austin emerging as one of the first major locations where that vision could become a practical service.
There is no steering wheel or pedals
One of the Cybercab's most distinctive characteristics is its unusual interior.
Designed as a two-seat vehicle, the Cybercab does not feature a steering wheel or conventional accelerator and brake pedals. Rather than being a conventional car equipped with advanced driver assistance technology, it has been designed from the beginning around the concept of autonomous transportation.
The vehicle is expected to rely entirely on Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) software to handle the driving task.
This approach reflects Tesla's broader ambition to move beyond driver assistance and eventually create a transportation system in which human intervention is no longer required.
Production is also expected to ramp up
The production version of the Cybercab began undergoing testing on public roads around two months ago. Tesla is expected to increase production gradually during the remainder of 2026.
Production of the Cybercab began at Gigafactory Texas in April. The first vehicles have been used primarily as test units, allowing Tesla to evaluate the system under different road, traffic and environmental conditions.
Such testing is particularly important for a vehicle without conventional driver controls, as engineers need to establish how reliably the system can respond to unexpected situations in the real world.
A crucial test for Tesla's autonomous-driving ambitions
Allowing Cybercab to transport passengers on public roads without human intervention could become a major milestone for Tesla's FSD technology.
The company has spent years promoting fully autonomous driving and robotaxis as key components of its long-term strategy. However, the current version of FSD still operates with various limitations and conditions.
The Cybercab therefore represents an opportunity to take Tesla's autonomous-driving technology beyond controlled testing environments and expose it to the complexities of everyday traffic.
If the Austin operation progresses as planned, Cybercab could become one of the clearest signs yet of Tesla's ambition to evolve from primarily being an automaker into a provider of autonomous transportation services.
