Supergirl Heads to Digital Much Sooner Than Expected as Release Date Is Confirmed
DC Studios' latest superhero film, Supergirl, is making an early transition to digital platforms after falling short of expectations at the global box office.
Following a disappointing theatrical run, Warner Bros. has confirmed that the film will be available through premium video-on-demand services just 36 days after its theatrical debut, giving audiences the opportunity to watch it from home much sooner than anticipated.
Digital release arrives on July 28
After premiering in theaters on June 22, Supergirl will officially become available on July 28 through premium digital storefronts, including Google Play Movies, iTunes, and other PVOD platforms.
Viewers will be able to either rent or purchase the film, making it accessible to those who missed its theatrical release.
Box office results fell below expectations
Despite carrying a production budget of nearly $200 million, Supergirl has earned only around $121 million worldwide at the box office.
Industry analysts estimate that the film could result in losses approaching $100 million for Warner Bros., although strong digital sales and rentals could help offset part of that financial shortfall.
A different take on Supergirl's origin
Unlike Superman, who was sent to Earth as an infant, Kara Zor-El spends part of her childhood on Krypton and witnesses the destruction of her home planet firsthand.
The emotional trauma of losing her world shapes her into a far more rebellious and impulsive hero. However, everything changes when she sets out to rescue a young girl, forcing her into an unexpected adventure that challenges both her strength and her character.
Milly Alcock leads the new DC adventure
The film stars Milly Alcock in the title role, while Craig Gillespie, best known for directing Cruella and I, Tonya, serves as director.
Another major highlight is Jason Momoa's debut as the iconic intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo, a character many DC fans have long wanted to see on the big screen.
Although its theatrical performance failed to meet expectations, Supergirl now has the opportunity to reach a broader audience through its upcoming digital release.
