F1 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix: Lando Norris Claims His First Victory of the Season
The final Formula 1 race before the summer break delivered plenty of excitement as Lando Norris secured his first win of the 2026 season at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The McLaren driver crossed the finish line ahead of Max Verstappen, while Mercedes youngster Andrea Kimi Antonelli completed the podium in third place after an action-packed 70-lap race at the Hungaroring.
McLaren dominated the early stages
Starting from pole position, Norris successfully defended his lead into Turn 1. However, teammate Oscar Piastri quickly overtook Charles Leclerc before passing Norris later on the opening lap to move into first place.
The McLaren duo immediately established themselves at the front of the field, while Verstappen climbed into third after overtaking Leclerc and remained within striking distance during the opening stint.
Strategy and reliability shaped the race
Pit stop strategy proved crucial throughout the afternoon as teams experimented with different tire compounds and race plans.
George Russell lost significant ground because of an electronic issue early in the race, while Lewis Hamilton spent several laps pressuring Verstappen for position. Ferrari also explored alternative strategies for Leclerc, and Verstappen repeatedly reported gearbox and handling concerns over team radio.
Meanwhile, Antonelli briefly inherited the race lead thanks to an alternative pit strategy, showcasing another mature performance from the young Mercedes driver.
Norris capitalized on Piastri's retirement
The turning point came when Oscar Piastri suffered a gearbox failure, forcing the Australian to retire despite leading comfortably for much of the race.
That handed Norris the lead, and the British driver never looked back. Managing his tires perfectly and maintaining a consistent pace, Norris controlled the closing laps to secure his first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 campaign.
Antonelli shines again
Andrea Kimi Antonelli continued his impressive rookie season with another podium finish. Thanks to smart strategy and a mistake-free drive, the Mercedes youngster secured third place behind Verstappen.
Despite struggling with multiple technical issues throughout the race, Verstappen minimized the damage by finishing second and collecting valuable championship points.
McLaren heads into the summer break with confidence
The Hungarian Grand Prix marked a major boost for McLaren. Norris finally celebrated his first victory of the season, while Piastri's retirement prevented the team from securing a likely one-two finish.
Even so, McLaren leaves the Hungaroring with renewed confidence as Formula 1 enters its summer break, while Norris gains valuable momentum for the second half of the championship.
