Lionel Messi Becomes the Highest Goalscorer in FIFA World Cup History

Lionel Messi has once again etched his name into football history. The Argentine captain scored twice in his team's 2-0 victory over Austria, further extending his record as the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup finals history.

Messi opened the scoring in the 38th minute before sealing the win with another strike deep into stoppage time. Argentina controlled the match from start to finish, while Austria struggled to create opportunities and managed only one shot on target.

With those two goals, Messi has now scored all five of Argentina’s goals in the opening two matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite approaching his 39th birthday, the legendary forward continues to perform at the highest level on football’s biggest stage.

The Argentine icon has now reached 18 goals in 28 World Cup appearances, extending his lead at the top of the all-time scoring chart. Germany’s Miroslav Klose follows with 16 goals, while Brazilian legend Ronaldo sits third with 15.

Messi also matched another remarkable World Cup record by scoring in six consecutive tournament matches. Only France’s Just Fontaine and Brazil’s Jairzinho had previously achieved the same feat.

Earlier in the tournament, Messi celebrated his 200th appearance for Argentina by scoring a hat-trick against Algeria, once again demonstrating his importance to the reigning world champions.

Competing in his sixth World Cup, Messi also holds the record for the most appearances in tournament history. After leading Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022, he continues to prove why he is regarded as one of the greatest footballers ever to play the game.

As Argentina pursues another world title, Messi’s extraordinary achievements continue to inspire football fans around the globe.
