Claire Williams: I Wouldn't Be Surprised If Alonso Returns to Alpine in F1

Speculation surrounding Fernando Alonso's Formula 1 future continues to grow, and former Williams team principal Claire Williams has now added her perspective to the discussion. According to Williams, a return to Alpine could be a realistic option for the Spanish veteran if Aston Martin's struggles continue.

Aston Martin has endured a difficult start to the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Silverstone-based team has managed to score only a single championship point so far, earned by Alonso during the Monaco Grand Prix. However, the Spaniard's home race in Barcelona ended in disappointment after a technical failure forced him to retire.

As a result, questions about Alonso's long-term future have intensified. While some observers have suggested retirement could be on the horizon, others believe a return to Alpine—the team linked to his most successful years—could be a more attractive option.

Much of the speculation revolves around Flavio Briatore, the influential figure who played a key role in Alonso's championship-winning Renault years in 2005 and 2006. With Briatore once again involved in Alpine's Formula 1 operations, many believe he could support a potential reunion.

Speaking on the High Performance Racing podcast, Claire Williams explained that a driver of Alonso's caliber naturally wants to compete at the front of the grid.

"A driver at Fernando's level wants to race, compete and fight for results. You don't want to spend your time running in the midfield or following others around. He's been dealing with that situation for quite a while now. That's why I wouldn't be surprised at all if he considered a move back to Alpine," Williams said.

Although Alonso's next move remains uncertain, his future is expected to remain one of the most closely watched storylines in Formula 1 over the coming months.
