Citroën 2CV Set for an Electric Comeback as a Modern Urban Icon
One of the most beloved vehicles in automotive history, the Citroën 2CV, appears ready for a remarkable return. This time, however, the legendary French model will embrace the future with an all-electric powertrain while preserving the simplicity, practicality, and affordability that made the original version so successful.
The new-generation 2CV is expected to enter production in 2028 at the Pomigliano d'Arco plant in Italy. According to current reports, the vehicle will be positioned as an affordable electric city car, with an estimated starting price of around €15,000.
A Design Inspired by the Original
Concept renders based on Stellantis' future mobility plans suggest that the new model will retain many visual cues from the classic 2CV. Although Citroën insists the vehicle is inspired by the spirit of the original rather than relying solely on nostalgia, its design clearly pays tribute to the iconic model.
Rounded body lines, a curved roof profile, and distinctive wheel arches evoke the charm of the historic 2CV while incorporating modern styling elements suitable for today's electric vehicle market.

Simplicity Remains a Core Principle
One of the most recognizable features expected to return is the large fabric folding roof, a hallmark of the original 2CV. The front fascia is also expected to feature prominent round headlights inspired by the classic model's distinctive appearance.
The vehicle's design philosophy appears focused on cost efficiency and practicality. Traditional door handles, larger side mirrors, and steel wheels suggest an emphasis on affordability rather than luxury. Early indications also point toward a four-seat cabin layout.
Debut Expected at the Paris Motor Show
Citroën has not officially confirmed the use of the 2CV name. However, the first concept version of the project is expected to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, scheduled for October 12–18, 2026.
Technical specifications remain limited, but industry expectations suggest the vehicle will be built on a new Stellantis electric platform designed for compact urban cars under four meters in length. This would position it below the Citroën C3 and Fiat Grande Panda in the company's lineup.
Potential Chinese Partnerships and Affordable EV Technology
Reports indicate that Stellantis may collaborate with Chinese partners such as Leapmotor and Dongfeng in developing the new electric platform. Both companies already maintain strategic relationships with the automotive group.
These partnerships could enable the use of cost-effective LFP battery technology, potentially delivering a driving range of approximately 250 kilometers. Such a setup would make the new 2CV particularly attractive as an affordable and efficient urban mobility solution.
