The Volkswagen Golf 9 Will Take Its Inspiration from the Golf Mk4!
One of the most iconic models in automotive history, the Volkswagen Golf, is preparing for a bold transformation with its next generation. The upcoming Golf Mk9 is not just another iteration—it represents a significant shift aligned with Volkswagen’s broader electric mobility strategy. Even before its official debut, the model is already generating strong excitement within the company.
Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer has spoken enthusiastically about the new Golf, noting that seeing the full-scale prototype left a strong impression on him. According to Schäfer, the design and overall presence of the vehicle exceeded expectations.
On the technical side, major progress has been made. Kai Grünitz, head of development at Volkswagen, revealed that the design of the Golf Mk9 is nearly complete, reaching around 96–97% completion. One of the most intriguing aspects is its design DNA. The new model draws inspiration from the beloved Volkswagen Golf Mk4, aiming to reinterpret its classic appeal with modern aesthetics rather than simply relying on nostalgia.
The most significant change lies under the hood. The Golf Mk9 is expected to be fully electric, built on Volkswagen’s next-generation SSP platform. However, the brand is not planning an abrupt shift away from combustion engines. Instead, both the fully electric new-generation Golf and updated internal combustion versions are expected to coexist for a period.
Performance enthusiasts will also have something to look forward to. Despite the transition to electrification, high-performance variants like the GTI and Golf R are expected to continue with internal combustion engines for some time. This reflects Volkswagen’s strategy to maintain a balance between innovation and customer loyalty.
Expected to debut around 2028, the Golf Mk9 has the potential to redefine its legacy in the electric era—provided it delivers on its ambitious promises.
