BYD Considers Entering Formula 1 to Strengthen Global Brand Presence
Chinese automaker BYD is reportedly exploring the possibility of entering competitive motorsports in an effort to boost its global brand recognition.
Following rapid expansion in overseas markets in recent years, the company has begun evaluating various motorsport projects, including the world’s most prestigious racing series, Formula 1.
Formula 1 and WEC Among the Options
According to reports, BYD is reviewing several motorsport categories as the industry increasingly shifts toward electrification and hybrid technologies.
Besides Formula 1, another championship under consideration is the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).
However, insiders suggest that Formula 1 may be the more attractive option for BYD. The company could either:
- establish its own Formula 1 team, or
- acquire or partner with an existing team.
Recent regulatory changes in Formula 1, balancing the performance contribution of internal combustion engines and electric power units, have made the sport more appealing to manufacturers with strong hybrid expertise.
A Rare Chinese Presence in F1
If BYD proceeds with such a move, it would represent a rare development in Formula 1, where most teams are traditionally based in Europe or the United States.
A Chinese automaker joining the grid could significantly diversify the sport’s global representation.
High Costs Remain a Major Barrier
Entering Formula 1 remains extremely expensive. Developing a competitive F1 car and establishing a team can take years of planning and negotiations.
Industry estimates suggest that a team’s annual costs can reach up to $500 million per season.
For this reason, many new manufacturers prefer acquiring stakes in existing teams rather than building entirely new ones.
FIA Open to a Chinese Team
The governing body of Formula 1, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), has expressed openness toward the idea of a Chinese team joining the sport.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem told Le Figaro last year that after the entry of Cadillac, the next logical step could be a Chinese manufacturer joining Formula 1.
BYD’s Rapid Rise in Electric Vehicles
After years of rapid growth, BYD has become the world’s largest producer of new energy vehicles (NEVs).
The company is also targeting the ultra-luxury segment. Its high-performance model Yangwang U9 achieved a remarkable lap time of 6:59.157 at the famous Nürburgring circuit in September 2025.
This performance made it the first fully electric production car to lap the track in under seven minutes, highlighting BYD’s ambitions in high-performance automotive engineering.
