Apple Introduces AirTag 2: Longer Range, Louder Sound and Smarter Tracking

Apple has quietly kicked off 2026 with the launch of its first new product of the year: the second-generation AirTag. Announced without a major event and made available directly through Apple’s website, AirTag 2 brings meaningful improvements in range, sound output, connectivity and safety—while keeping its familiar design intact.

At the core of the new AirTag lies Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip, also used in devices like the iPhone 17 and Apple Watch Ultra 3. Thanks to this upgraded technology, Precision Finding now works at a range approximately 50% longer than before. Enhanced Bluetooth coverage further improves tracking accuracy, making it easier to locate misplaced items such as keys, wallets or bags—even from a greater distance.

Louder Speaker for Faster Discovery

One of the most common criticisms of the first AirTag was its relatively quiet speaker. Apple has addressed this by boosting the sound output in AirTag 2. The new model delivers up to 50% louder audio, making it significantly easier to locate lost items using sound cues.

Find AirTag Directly from Apple Watch

Another major upgrade arrives for Apple Watch users. With watchOS 26.2.1, AirTag tracking can now be performed directly from an Apple Watch, eliminating the need for an iPhone. Users can receive on-screen directions and distance indicators straight from their wrist. This feature is supported on Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Ultra 2 and newer models.

Enhanced Safety and Anti-Tracking Measures

Apple continues to emphasize user privacy and safety with improved protections against unwanted tracking. AirTag 2 features refined alert systems and cross-platform notifications that warn users if an unknown AirTag is detected nearby. If the device cannot be located, it will automatically emit a sound after a certain period. To avoid unnecessary alerts, this feature only activates when the AirTag is separated from its owner.

Same Design, Stronger Environmental Commitment

Visually, AirTag 2 remains unchanged, ensuring compatibility with existing AirTag accessories. However, Apple has strengthened its environmental focus. The device uses 85% recycled plastic in its enclosure, 100% recycled rare earth elements in its magnets, and 100% recycled gold in the plating of Apple-designed circuit boards. Packaging is made entirely from fiber-based, recyclable materials.

Apple has confirmed a slight price increase for the new AirTag. Still, with its improved range, louder speaker, expanded device support and enhanced security features, AirTag 2 represents a notable evolution in Apple’s item-tracking ecosystem.
