BYD's Flash Charging Revolution: 400 km Range in Just 5 Minutes!
Chinese EV powerhouse BYD has showcased its groundbreaking ultra-fast charging tech in real-world tests, with a video posted on social media on December 22 capturing a vehicle gaining nearly 400 km of range in about five minutes at 746 kW. This feat represents a major leap in tackling "range anxiety," bringing EV refueling times on par with gas station pit stops.
The Tech Powering the Speed
The magic lies in BYD's Super e-Platform, launched in March 2025 as the first mass-produced "integrated 1000V high-voltage architecture" for passenger cars. Central to it is the Flash Charging Battery, delivering record 1000A currents and 10C rates, with peak power hitting 1 megawatt—adding 2 km of range per second.
BYD explains that internal resistance is slashed by 50% via ultra-fast ion pathways from anode to cathode, keeping heat in check during rapid charging. The Han L sedan (83.2 kWh pack) goes from 10% to 70% in six minutes and fully charges in 20. The Tang L SUV (100.5 kWh) adds 370 km in five minutes.
Leaving Competitors in the Dust and Global Rollout
BYD's speeds dwarf rivals: Tesla's Gen 3 Superchargers offer 250 kW for 275 km in 15 minutes, with V4s capped at 325 kW despite 500 kW potential. Mercedes' new CLA manages 325 km in 10 minutes.
"True freedom means charging as fast as filling gas," declared BYD CEO Wang Chuanfu at the unveil. The firm aims for over 4,000 Flash stations in China this year, with global push including 300 UK highway chargers by end-2026 and 200-300 in Europe by Q2 2026, spearheaded by premium Denza brand.
This tech promises to supercharge the EV shift worldwide.
