Nintendo releases first look at the live-action Legend of Zelda Film

Nintendo has unveiled the first official images from its highly anticipated live-action The Legend of Zelda film, offering fans a detailed look at Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. Released through the Nintendo Today app on Monday morning, the images mark the official beginning of production in New Zealand ahead of the film’s theatrical debut on May 7, 2027.

The announcement follows a wave of leaked set footage that emerged over the weekend, giving fans an unofficial early glimpse of the characters in costume. Nintendo responded with three carefully prepared images accompanied by an orchestrated rendition of Zelda’s Lullaby, providing a polished introduction to a project that has been in development since its announcement in November 2023.

A Blend of Eras from Across the Zelda Universe

The newly released images suggest a deliberate mixture of visual influences from multiple Zelda titles. Bragason’s depiction of Princess Zelda reflects the blue hues of her Breath of the Wild incarnation, while Ainsworth’s Link appears in a classic green tunic reminiscent of Twilight Princess or Ocarina of Time.

The absence of Link’s iconic cap has sparked discussion about whether the film will follow a specific game or craft an original narrative that borrows elements from several entries in the series.

A Live-Action Miyazaki Dream

Director Wes Ball—best known for The Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes—has previously spoken about his ambition to create a “live-action Miyazaki” experience. Drawing inspiration from Hayao Miyazaki’s signature sense of wonder, Ball aims to blend epic fantasy with a warm, whimsical tone.

The film is being produced by Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and longtime Hollywood figure Avi Arad. The screenplay is written by Derek Connolly and T.S. Nowlin. Production is taking place in Wellington, New Zealand, the same location that hosted Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, and is expected to continue through April 2026.
