Apple makes iPhone Fold’s hinge much cheaper than expected

Apple’s long-rumored iPhone Fold is shaping up to be one of the company’s most ambitious projects yet. According to well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the device’s hinge mechanism will cost $70 to $80 less than previously expected — a major shift that could significantly lower production expenses.

Kuo reports that 65% of the hinges will be manufactured by a joint venture between Foxconn and Shin Zu Shing, while Amphenol will produce the remaining 35%. Starting sometime after 2027, Luxshare-ICT may also join Apple’s hinge supply chain, potentially driving costs down even further.

The price reduction is said to come primarily from Foxconn’s assembly design optimizations, which simplified the hinge construction and improved efficiency. This means Apple can either maintain its premium pricing while increasing profit margins or — less likely — make the iPhone Fold more affordable.

The introduction of Luxshare-ICT is also seen as a sign that the foldable hinge has become a key battleground for hardware assemblers, as brands seek to balance durability with production efficiency.

Ultimately, Apple’s success in lowering hinge costs without compromising quality reinforces its reputation for engineering excellence. The iPhone Fold may not only redefine Apple’s product lineup but also raise the bar for the entire foldable smartphone market.
