A new report based on Apple’s internal developer code has sparked fresh speculation in the tech world. According to the findings, the company is working on bringing Touch ID, its fingerprint recognition system, to the Apple Watch lineup as early as next year, potentially debuting with the Apple Watch Ultra 4.
The leaked code makes references to “AppleMesa,” the internal codename Apple has used for Touch ID technology for years. This suggests the feature is still in the prototype phase and currently limited to in-house testing, meaning this year’s Apple Watch models will not include it.
Given the compact nature of smartwatches, integrating a fingerprint sensor presents certain challenges. Apple may adopt the same approach used in the iPad Air, embedding the sensor into the power button. Another possibility is an under-display solution, similar to what is commonly seen on Android devices.
Meanwhile, recent rumors also point to a significant redesign for next year’s Apple Watch models. If true, Touch ID could easily become part of this transformation. Looking ahead, Apple is also expected to introduce a new processor in its 2026 lineup, boosting overall performance.
If implemented, Touch ID on the Apple Watch could provide not only enhanced security but also a smoother user experience, further solidifying Apple’s dominance in wearable technology.
