Tesla unveils 'Model Y L' – A China-specific, larger version of its bestseller

Tesla, the trailblazer of electric mobility, has unveiled a new variant of its top-selling model: the Model Y L. Designed specifically for the Chinese market, this version—nicknamed “Juniper”—is a stretched and more spacious edition of the familiar Model Y.

Recently revealed through regulatory filings submitted to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Model Y L features an elongated body and a design reminiscent of the premium Model X. While the sloped roofline and C-pillar silhouette hint at the Model X’s styling, the front fascia still maintains the identity of the classic Model Y.

The Model Y L measures 4,976 mm in length, making it approximately 179 mm longer than the standard version. While the width remains unchanged at 1,920 mm, the height is increased to 1,668 mm, gaining 40 mm. Most significantly, the wheelbase has been stretched to 3,040 mm—offering a roomier cabin that’s expected to include a six-seat configuration.

Under the hood, the Model Y L is equipped with a lithium-ion battery pack produced by LG Energy Solution. With a curb weight of 2,008 kg, it houses dual electric motors: a 142 kW unit at the front and a 198 kW motor at the rear, providing a combined output of around 462 horsepower. These specs bring it close to the pre-facelift Model Y Performance in terms of dynamic capability.

With its increased cabin space and potent powertrain, the Model Y L is tailored to meet the preferences of Chinese consumers—especially families and those valuing interior comfort. While it is currently limited to the Chinese market, Tesla's move could pave the way for similar region-specific versions in the future.
