The Formula 1 world is abuzz with the rumor that Mick Schumacher — son of the legendary Michael Schumacher — might be making a comeback to the grid. This possibility is gaining momentum, with speculation pointing to a seat at Alpine, where current driver Franco Colapinto may be on shaky ground.
Mick Schumacher is currently racing for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), and he recently visited Indianapolis for the Indy 500, reportedly meeting with Cadillac F1 representatives. However, sources suggest his F1 return may not be through Cadillac but rather through Alpine, with whom he already has a working relationship.
This rumor was fueled by Austrian media outlet OE24, which reported that Alpine’s management has secretly been in talks with Schumacher. Flavio Briatore, recently appointed as the team’s head, is said to be dissatisfied with Colapinto’s performance. The young Argentine has underperformed in key races, notably finishing outside the points in Imola and coming last in Monaco qualifiers.
It’s believed Colapinto was given a five-race window to prove himself. After underwhelming results in the first two, only Spain, Canada, and Austria remain. Yet insiders claim Alpine might not wait that long, already reaching out to Schumacher as a potential replacement.
Former F1 driver and current Sky Deutschland analyst Timo Glock weighed in: “Mick has far more experience than Colapinto. If Franco doesn’t deliver, Mick is a logical alternative. He continues to learn, and in WEC, he’s consistently the fastest among his teammates.”
Given Briatore's reputation for bold moves, a Schumacher return to Formula 1 may be closer than many anticipated.
