Windows 11 user base on the rise

Statcounter recently published a report shedding light on the global market share of Windows operating systems, and the results highlight a significant shift. As of September 2024, Windows 11 has made a remarkable leap in its adoption rates.

According to Statcounter’s latest report, Windows 11 has reached its highest usage rate since its launch, now surpassing 33% of the global market share. This increase represents a notable milestone for the operating system.

In September 2024 alone, Windows 11’s market share surged by 1.74 percentage points. While the platform continues to gain steady traction month by month, its predecessor, Windows 10, has started to show signs of decline. Windows 10’s market share dropped by 1.35 percentage points during the same period. Despite this drop, Windows 10 still holds a commanding lead, outpacing Windows 11 by a two-to-one margin, with Statcounter reporting a 62.79% market share for the older OS.

This trend is expected to persist as Windows 10 enters its final year of mainstream support. The upcoming introduction of new processors by Intel and AMD, coupled with a major feature update for Windows 11 scheduled for October, is likely to further accelerate the shift toward Microsoft’s latest operating system.

Breakdown of Windows Market Share:

Windows 10 and 11 combined dominate the market with a commanding 96.16% share. The individual figures for September 2024 are as follows:

  • Windows 10: 62.79% (-1.35 percentage points)
  • Windows 11: 33.37% (+1.74 percentage points)
  • Windows 7: 2.85%

As Windows 11 continues to grow, it appears poised to steadily close the gap with Windows 10, especially with enhanced features and hardware support on the horizon.
