The FIA World Motor Sport Council recently convened on Thursday to discuss and approve some significant rule changes. One of the major decisions was to eliminate the extra point given to the driver with the fastest lap starting from the 2025 Formula 1 season.
The Brief History of the Fastest Lap Point
The fastest lap point was introduced in 2019 with the goal of adding excitement to the races and offering opportunities to drivers who were not fighting for top positions. This rule allowed some drivers to secure an extra point by achieving the fastest lap towards the end of the race. However, the impact of this change fell short of expectations, failing to significantly enhance the spectacle.
Controversies Around the Rule
The fastest lap point often favored drivers who had fallen behind the leaders but maintained a substantial gap with those trailing them. Instead of fostering a more competitive atmosphere, it drew criticism for influencing the points system without adding much to the racing dynamics. The rule came under renewed scrutiny during the Singapore Grand Prix last month, where RB’s Daniel Ricciardo aimed to prevent McLaren from scoring by setting the fastest lap.
A New Era Starts in 2025
With the removal of the fastest lap point, the maximum points a driver can earn on race day will be capped at 25 from the 2025 season onwards. This shift is expected to reshape race strategies and ensure that drivers and teams remain competitive throughout each race.
