X (Twitter) changes blocking function: Blocked accounts can now see your posts

Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) is making a significant change to its blocking function. Under the new policy, blocked users will still be able to view your public posts, though they will be restricted from interacting with them. Elon Musk, the platform’s owner, confirmed the change, stating that blocking will only prevent interactions, not the ability to see public posts.

How Does the New Blocking System Work?

Currently, when someone blocks you, attempting to view their profile displays a “You are blocked” message. This blocks access to their posts, replies, media, followers, and follow lists. With the new update, blocked users will still be able to see your posts, but they will not be able to engage with them in any way.

According to a source within X, the reason for this change is that users can already view posts from those who blocked them by using alternative accounts or browsing while logged out. This adjustment formalizes what was already possible through loopholes in the system.

Musk’s Stance on Blocking

Elon Musk has been vocal in his disapproval of the blocking feature, previously calling it “pointless.” He suggested that a more powerful “mute” function should replace it. Additionally, Musk has expressed that the platform should only allow users to block others in direct messaging contexts, rather than entirely across the platform.

This new policy is likely to spark debate among X users, especially regarding privacy and user control. While blocked accounts can now see posts, the inability to interact with them still provides a layer of protection, though users may need to adjust their expectations around what blocking truly accomplishes on the platform.
