Apple’s most significant artificial intelligence initiative to date, Apple Intelligence, seems poised to cause significant disruptions. The European Union’s digital market regulations are preventing the release of the Apple Intelligence package across the continent.
According to a statement from Apple, due to the Digital Markets Act, Apple Intelligence, macOS Sequa, iPhone mirroring feature, and SharePlay screen sharing will not be available in Europe this year. The regulation requires that any integration between a company’s applications must not compromise user privacy. Since the key features introduced with iOS 18 do not comply with this rule, Apple is avoiding the risk of launching these features in Europe. How the company plans to adapt these features remains to be seen.
In recent months, due to the same regulation, Apple canceled plans to add web application widgets to the home screen. Similarly, Google had to remove third-party watch faces from its WearOS operating system on smartwatches.
