Opel focuses on EVs: Unveiling its new vision at the Frontera launch

With the decline in demand for electric cars, we have begun to see many brands revising their plans for 2030. However, unlike Ford, Volkswagen, and Mercedes, Opel does not see this as a threat. On the contrary, it is determined to increase its investments in electric vehicles.

Opel CEO Florian Huettl emphasized at the Frontera launch in Istanbul that they believe electric vehicles are the only solution for the future. Therefore, the main focus for Opel will be to produce electric cars that are “accessible to everyone.”

Opel will continue to use platforms with multiple energy options, such as Stellantis’s STLA Medium. However, it is known that the brand plans to transition to selling exclusively electric cars by 2025. Huettl stated that this plan has not changed, saying:

“With Frontera and the new Grandland, we have completed the first phase of the electrification process at Opel. In the future, all Opel models are planned to be electric. We have a fantastic example like Experimantal.”

Frontera will be one of Opel’s other products in the electric vehicle market. The initial version of the model will have 48-volt mild hybrid technology. With its 1.2-liter turbocharged petrol engine, this version will produce a total of 136 horsepower. The fully electric version is expected to have a range of 300 kilometers according to WLTP data. The “long-range” version is also planned to be released in the near future.
