Turkey Crowned European Champions After Dramatic Victory Over Italy
Turkey's women's national volleyball team has been crowned European champions after defeating Italy 3-2 in a thrilling final. Despite falling behind twice, the Turkish side fought back to force a decisive fifth set and ultimately secured a second consecutive European Championship title.
The final quickly developed into a dramatic battle of momentum. Italy made the stronger start and took the opening set 25-16, putting Turkey under immediate pressure.
The Turkish team responded in the second set, however, finding greater consistency in both attack and defence to level the match with a 25-22 victory.
Italy regained control in the third set and produced one of its strongest stretches of the match. Turkey struggled to contain its opponents and lost the set 25-12, leaving the national team one set away from defeat.
But the reigning champions refused to give up.
Turkey raised its intensity in the fourth set, improving its defensive resistance while becoming more effective at the net. The effort paid off as the team won 25-21 and forced the match into a deciding set.
With the championship on the line, Turkey remained composed in the fifth set. The national team controlled the crucial moments and eventually won 15-10 to complete a remarkable 3-2 comeback.
Back-to-back European titles
The victory represents far more than another trophy for Turkey. The Filenin Sultanları have once again established themselves among the leading forces in European women's volleyball.
Winning the championship after twice falling behind Italy highlighted the team's physical resilience, mental strength and ability to respond under pressure.
Turkey had already produced an impressive run on its way to the final. The national team defeated Serbia 3-0 in the semi-final, winning the sets 25-20, 25-19 and 25-20.
Earlier in the tournament, Turkey had overcome Germany 3-1 in the quarter-finals.
A strong campaign from start to finish
Turkey's championship journey began in the group stage, where the team won four of its five matches.
The national side then defeated Azerbaijan 3-0 in the round of 16 before overcoming Germany in the quarter-finals.
Turkey had also faced Germany during the group stage, winning that encounter 3-1.
The tournament itself was spread across several host cities, with matches taking place in countries including Turkey, the Czech Republic, Azerbaijan and Sweden.
European glory secures Olympic qualification
The European title also delivered another major reward for Turkey.
The championship means the Turkish women's national team has secured its place at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Turkey will therefore appear at the Olympic Games for the fourth time overall and for the third consecutive edition, following appearances at London 2012, Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.
The European title provides an important platform as the team begins its journey toward Los Angeles.
Turkish players shine individually
Turkey's success in women's volleyball has also been reflected in individual awards.
At the previous European Championship, Turkish players dominated the major individual categories. Cansu Özbay was named best setter, Melissa Vargas received the best opposite award, Ebrar Karakurt was selected as best outside hitter, Zehra Güneş was named best middle blocker and Gizem Örge was chosen as the best libero.
Vargas also received the tournament's Most Valuable Player award.
Most of those award-winning players returned to the national team for this tournament. Ebrar Karakurt was the notable exception after missing out because of injury.
Turkey firmly at the top of Europe
The final against Italy was a fitting demonstration of the identity Turkey has built in recent years.
After twice falling behind, the team refused to surrender and produced its strongest volleyball when the pressure was at its highest. The fourth-set comeback and composed performance in the deciding set ultimately delivered another European crown.
Turkey is no longer simply a team hoping to compete for medals. The Filenin Sultanları have established themselves as one of the permanent contenders for the top of European volleyball.
Now, the next major target is Los Angeles 2028. After conquering Europe once again, Turkey will look to carry that momentum onto the world's biggest sporting stage.
